Emotional
Intelligence is an important skill that applies in almost every aspect of one’s
life.
We have many
ways of boosting your emotional intelligence as discussed below:
1. Understand your emotions and what
triggers them
To
understand other people well, you first have to be able to understand yourself.
2. Develop Self-awareness
Self-awareness
is about being mindful of what is happening in your life and having a plan of how
you see your life improving.
To develop
self-awareness, you need to increase your sensitivity about your emotions and gut
feelings.
3. Engage with other people in your
community
Empathy is
the main trait of emotionally intelligent people, and you can develop it by
actually practicing empathy!
By engaging
with others, you automatically raise your emotional intelligence.
4. Learn to deal with criticism
Negative
feedback if used well can help boost your emotional intelligence. As much as a
negative feedback might look bad to you, try to learn something from it and
this will help you increase your emotional intelligence.
5. Develop Self-management
Self-management
is about controlling your emotions. You can improve your self-management
through developing integrity by:
-making
promises you can keep
-Being
self-disciplined especially if you expect the same from other people
6. Listen without Judging
The main
characteristic of a good listener is to listen with empathy, and that means
without judging the person you are conversing with. Emotional intelligent
people show interest in other people by encouraging them to speak more even if
they don’t agree with what they are saying and creating an environment where it
is safe to open up and say what you want to say.
