Emotional
Intelligence is simply the ability to understand and manage your emotions as
well as those of the people around you. Emotional Intelligence helps you
develop leadership skills, maintain relationships and navigate skilfully through
difficult periods of life.
Emotional Intelligence
is one of the important skills employers look for when they are recruiting new
employees because workers with high degree of Emotional Intelligence (EI) are
good team-players, can work well under pressure, and can communicate
effectively in a culturally diverse environment.
You can develop Emotional Intelligence
in 4 ways as discussed below:
Know Yourself
Try to
understand your emotions i.e. why you feel in a certain way, and what triggers
such kinds of emotions. It is easy to avoid certain situations when you know
the triggers or if they are unavoidable then find a way in which you can deal
with them.
Understanding
the triggers can help you have a better self-awareness which in turn helps you
learn how certain emotions or people make you feel and why.
Think before you speak
Once you’ve
identified your emotion and know what has triggered it, take some time to
understand it i.e. process it before responding to it. When you know something
made you feel angry, it becomes much easier to decide what your next step will
be.
Try to understand others
To
understand somebody else’s motives and emotions, you should be will to devote
your undivided attention and mind to that person. This might be challenging to
some people but is the only way you can go about getting to understand the
people you interact with.
Practice Self-management
If you learn
how to identify, control and express your emotions, you will be able to use
them in a way that is most effective under the circumstances. The best way you
can improve your self-management is to have emotional self-control and constantly
work on enhancing your integrity.
